There is little I can relay in regards to the actual plot of “Zoom” without eradicating your discovery, so here are the basics: The film follows three distinct storylines – Emma (Alison Pill) is a cartoonist with severe body image issues, Michelle (Mariana Ximenes) is a model desperate to shed superficial boundaries and demonstrate her innate sensibilities as an author, and Edward (Gael García Bernal) is a director with an unflinching vision whose confidence stems from his sexual prowess.
With that said, I’m here to tell you that director Pedro Morelli’s “ Zoom” revolves around subjects ranging from abusive relationships to breast implants to penis pumps, it rarely shies away from immaturity, and that it most certainly is a work of art. It is meant to say to you – the reader – that this is a film of depth or progressive maturity. She ends up choosing a mail drug drop meant to be for the personal trainer next door.Stylistically, when a critic references a film as a ‘work of art’, this often leads to pretentious debates on abstract expressionism or conflicting social ideologies. Things get worse as Michelle thinks of original ways of making money such as winning the lotto. Each lives in a separate reality but authors a story about one of the others.Įmma, working at a sex doll factory in Toronto, fantasizes about having larger breasts and undergoes augmentation surgery, only to regret her choice.Įdward has a big Spanish penis that Emma makes small because of her frustration at not having the money to have her implants removed. The film is a multi-dimensional interface between comic book artist Emma Boyles (drawing Deacon's reality), novelist Michelle (writing Boyles' reality), and film director Edward Deacon (filming Michelle's reality).
